What are free radicals
Free radicals are usually oxygen molecules that have lost an electron. This makes them unstable (in chemical terminology – reactive). They attack the molecular electrons around them. They attack: DNA, RNA, enzymes and proteins, disrupting normal cell activity, and also cell membranes, producing chain reactions of destruction. Other dangerous varieties of atoms and oxygen molecules are known as Reactive oxygen species (ROS). They are not free radicals in the technical sense, but they are no less unstable and are highly reactive with the molecules around them. Medical research has shown that oxidative stress – a constant attack of oxy radicals and reactive oxygen species is important for the initiation and development of many pathological conditions and significant diseases. In the first place, they are factors in the causes of diseases and are also an incentive for diseases to spread throughout the body. The list of diseases associated with oxy radicals and types of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is very long.
The causes for formation of free radicals
The creation of free radicals in the body is a continuous and inevitable process. The processes that lead to the formation of free radicals are: processes due to internal and external substances of pollution, poor and inadequate nutrition, consumption of insufficiently purified water (due to the passage through pipes) and chronic stress.
In modern life, we are constantly exposed to substances from the environment that generate free radicals in the body: foods that contain chemicals (fertilizers and pesticides), processed foods that contain a high percentage of lipid peroxides, many drugs, cigarette smoke, environmental pollution, polluted air, alcohol, all types of electromagnetic radiation including solar radiation.

In response to stress, the body creates an abundance of free radicals. Also, a sedentary lifestyle and work, lack of physical activity, as well as excessive physical activity leads to the creation of an increased number of free radicals.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD), https://www.lv-pharm.rs/2018/superoksid-dismutaza-sod-ayurveda-uticaj-celulit-sire/, is the first detoxification enzyme and the most powerful antioxidant in the cell. It is an important endogenous antioxidant enzyme that acts as a component of the first-line defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It catalyzes two molecules of superoxide anion into hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen, which makes the potentially harmful superoxide anion less dangerous. SOD is a metalloenzyme and therefore requires a metal cofactor for its activity (manganese, zinc, magnesium).
SOD has therapeutic effects in various physiological and pathological conditions such as: rheumatoid arthritis, hardening and shrinkage of tissues (eg cellulite), inflammatory diseases, cystic fibrosis, ischemia, diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, aging.
SOD is essential for cell health because it protects the body’s cells from excessive oxygen radicals, free radicals and other harmful agents that promote aging or cell death. SOD levels decline with age, while free radical formation increases. Proper daily additions of SOD will protect the immune system and significantly reduce the chances of disease and ultimately slow down the aging process. Enzymes (eg SOD) are large molecules that cannot pass through the wall of the digestive system and therefore cannot enter the bloodstream. In order to overcome this problem, SOD in the ROSProtect was obtained from a special type of melon (Cucumis melo). An encapsulated SOD was obtained by a special technological procedure, which enabled its complete resorption into the bloodstream and lymph.
N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is an N-acetylated derivative of the amino acid L-cysteine. It is a source of sulfuidryl groups, which represent a significant component of the body’s overall antioxidant protection. It also stimulates glutathione synthesis (NAC is a source of L-cysteine that otherwise serves as a precursor to glutathione). A number of clinical studies indicate a beneficial effect of N-acetyl-L-cysteine in cancer, cardiovascular disease, HIV infection, heavy metal poisoning and all other diseases characterized by increased oxidative stress.
Ellagic acid has significant antioxidant activities, lowers lipid peroxidation and increases GSH levels (reduced form of glutathione) and is an extremely versatile means of protection against toxic effects caused by oxidative stress. Ellagic acid provides continuous protection against oxidative stress through the cascade removal of free radicals. Chemopreventive, anticancer, antimutagenic and antiviral activities are also attributed to ellagic acid.

Sodium ascorbate, a buffered form of vitamin C, is the most important water-soluble antioxidant and a powerful reducing agent. Vitamin C can act both inside and outside of cells, it is an excellent source of electrons for free radicals. It can donate electrons to free radicals and thus quench their reactivity.
